Hydrate or Die-drate!

The human body can function for more than 3 weeks without food, however access to water is a different story. It is estimated that humans could last up to a week without access to water, but this would be under ideal circumstances. It is even more important to make sure you are hydrated during extended physical exercise, such as backpacking. This can sometimes be difficult to find access to water while hiking backcountry trails. It is crucial research trails that you plan to take, map out potential water sources and their reliability. An example of this would be the reliability of a mountain spring would be less certain than a river running through a gorge. Access to water is not the only thing you must concern yourself with, it is also highly advised that if you plan to use natural water that it is purified in some way shape or form. There are 3 methods that are widely used among backpackers and backcountry travelers. These purification methods include manual water pumps, iodine tablets, and boiling the water. There are pros and cons to each of these methods, which one you decide to use is completely up to your individual preferences.

Manual Water Pumps:

Pros: Most effective method in removing bacteria and dirt particles, is the most effective method when using a water source with a low water level

Cons: Is an extra piece of equipment that adds extra weight to your pack as wells as taking up extra space.

Iodine Tablets:

Pros: Is an effective and light weight alternative to manual pumps

Cons: Gives the water a chemical taste that can take a while to get used to, will not be able to remove as many particles

Boiling water:

Pros: Will be the most light weight option due to only having to carry cooking utensils in order to have clean water.

Cons: Not able to filter as many particles as the manual water pump, Is not an effective method for low water levels such as a spring.

Now that we know the different methods of water purification it is now time for you to decide what method you would prefer. In my experience even though it adds weight and takes up space in your pack the manual water pump is the best option for backpacking, unless you are completely sure of a fast-flowing water source. Since we now know the proper way to stay hydrated safely in the backcountry it’s time to get outside and enjoy.
